"Salsa from Within... Cuba!"
Kerry and Charles met in a previous existence in Cuba and later conversations led to them deciding to work together and go back and film their own work about Salsa dance in Cuba. Kerry's own teaching workshops are dealt with under the banner of "Salsa from Within". This neatly alludes to understanding your own body and how it operates when you are learning to dance well. The Mind Body centering background of Kerry's training is the basis for this.
Kerry is brilliant at encouraging and persuading people to improve their personal movement skills. Her Laban technique makes it possible for her to analyze peoples' movements and help them to understand Latin style. This comes across wonderfully at her classes at the Pontin's Salsa Weekends and workshops around the country. Here is some of Kerry's background: In her postgraduate year at the Laban Centre she obtained distinction in Movement Analysis and in 1987 won a Lisa Ullman Travelling Scholarship to research dance in Brazil. Kerry is a qualified teacher and has taught dance from GCSE to postgraduate level and Salsa to both amateur and professional dancers. Kerry has taught for over 8 years at Club Brazil and The Mambo Inn in Brixton. What makes Kerry's classes so special is her understanding of the body gained through seven years study of Body Mind Centering (BMC) with Patricia Bardi. This included anatomy of breath, organs, skeleton, nerves, glands and muscular integration. She has initiated and teaches "Moving from Within" Courses in London and works as a free-lance bodyworker, analyst and coach for TV presenters and performance artists and 'Breakthrough International USA'. Kerry has performed alongside Madonna in Evita, performed on live TV with Kaoma and her choreographed work has been staged at Saddlers Wells, the ICA and on British TV channels. Kerry has won awards for her dance research in Brazil and her work has been featured in Time-Out, Salsa World, Best and Animated Dance magazine. She teaches movement at Brunel University. What other people have said about Kerry: "In my three years of training, I have never felt
as free or fluid as in Kerry's workshop" (The Times - Norma Cohen)" Anyone
can teach the steps. Kerry really knows how to explain the body movements
and how to connect the body in Salsa".Salsa DJ & dancer: Louis de Andrade; Kerry's current movements are a mystery as we do not have any recent information from her. |
